To check your WiFi speed, open a browser on any device connected to your network and go to fast.com or speedtest.net. The test takes 30 to 60 seconds and gives you three numbers: download speed, upload speed, and ping. Download speed is what most people care about for streaming and browsing. Upload matters for video calls and cloud backups. Ping (latency) matters for gaming. This guide explains how to run an accurate test, interpret the results, and identify whether a slow reading points to your router, your ISP, or the device itself.

How to Run an Accurate Speed Test

  1. Pause everything using your network. Other devices streaming or downloading will steal bandwidth from your test and give you a falsely low reading. Pause any active downloads, close background apps, and ask others on the network to stop streaming while you test.
  2. Run the test on the device closest to the router first. This tells you the best-case speed your router can deliver. If this number is much lower than your ISP plan speed, the problem is at the router or modem level. If it is close to your plan speed, the router is fine and any slow devices are suffering from distance or interference.
  3. Run the same test on the slow device in its usual location. Compare this to the router-side result. A large gap between the two means the problem is WiFi signal quality, not your ISP connection.
  4. Test with an ethernet cable as the control. Plug a laptop directly into your router or modem with a Cat5e or Cat6 cable and run the test again. If wired speed matches your ISP plan but WiFi is much slower, the problem is in your wireless setup. If wired is also slow, the problem is your ISP or modem.

Ping under 30ms is ideal for gaming. Ping of 30 to 80ms is acceptable for casual online play. Anything over 100ms on a wired connection points to ISP routing issues worth reporting. On WiFi, some jitter is normal, but consistent ping above 80ms in a room near the router suggests radio interference or a crowded channel.

Speed Test Tools Compared

Speedtest.net (Ookla) is the most widely used and tests download, upload, and ping simultaneously. It lets you pick the test server, which is useful for comparing different server distances. The free tier works well; the app also shows connection type (WiFi vs cellular) and logs history.

Fast.com is Netflix’s own speed test. It is intentionally simple: download speed only, no frills. Because Netflix runs the servers, the result reflects specifically how fast you can pull video data. Add “?your_latency=true” to the URL to also see ping and upload.

Waveform BUFFERBLOAT test (waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat) measures latency under load, which is the more relevant metric for video calls and gaming. A connection can show 200 Mbps download speed but still feel sluggish on Zoom if bufferbloat is high. This test reveals that problem; the others do not.

Why Your Speed Test Result Is Lower Than Your ISP Plan

A few percentage points below your plan speed is normal. ISP plans are “up to” figures measured under ideal conditions. Getting 90 percent of your plan speed consistently is good performance.

A result of 50 percent or less usually points to one of these causes. WiFi interference or distance from the router is the most common. If you are testing two rooms away through walls on 5 GHz, a 60 percent speed drop is expected. Move to a less congested WiFi channel or switch to 2.4 GHz for that device to improve range at some cost to peak speed.

An overloaded router is another frequent cause. Consumer routers can struggle when 20 or more devices are active simultaneously. ISP throttling applies to some plans, particularly mobile data. If your wired test is also slow, run the test at different times of day. Consistent slowdowns during peak hours (evening 7 to 11pm) with faster speeds at off-peak times are a sign of network congestion on your ISP side.

Checking WiFi Speed From the Router Admin Panel

Your router admin panel shows live connection data that a speed test site cannot: which devices are connected, what frequency band each is on, the RSSI (signal strength) for each device, and real-time bandwidth usage per device. Access the panel by typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into a browser address bar (the exact address is printed on your router’s label).

Look for a section labeled Connected Devices, WiFi Clients, or DHCP Clients. A device showing a 2.4 GHz connection in a room adjacent to a 5 GHz router may be getting full speed. A device at -75 dBm RSSI or weaker is experiencing poor signal. Anything stronger than -65 dBm is a healthy connection. Why is my WiFi speed slow but internet fast on a wired connection?

This means your ISP connection and modem are fine. The bottleneck is between your router and your wireless device. Causes include weak signal (distance or walls), WiFi channel congestion, or an older WiFi standard on your device or router. Try moving closer to the router and changing the WiFi channel first.

How often should I run a speed test?

Run one when setting up a new router, when performance feels off, and whenever you are troubleshooting a specific device. For a baseline, test three times at different times of day (morning, afternoon, evening) and average the results. Variability of plus or minus 20 percent across tests is normal.

Does the speed test use my data?
